Purpose:
InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.
The position of Computer Literacy Instructor supports InspireDR’s computer literacy program.Through the computer literacy program, the boys learn the basics of computer operation, how to use office productivity software, typing, and internet safety.

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
Key Responsibilities:
The Computer Literacy Instructor will provide beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons to groups of 12 to 18 boys. This is not an assistant position and – while the InspireDR staff is available to discuss lesson planning and the boys’ individual abilities – the Computer Literacy Instructor will be teaching on their own. As the boys’ skills build, we hope to introduce more computer projects in order to develop their employability and to help them with their school and university homework. Prior to your service, we can tell you what skill level of lessons we have coming up.
We are seeking an instructor who is able to make their classes fun and interactive. They will work with the Program Director to follow our curriculum as well as monitor and evaluate student progress.
The Computer Literacy Instructor will also maintain the computer lab’s materials, such as computers, software, tablets, and other electronics.
While attempts are made to keep the study groups close in age, there may be up to a five-year difference in age within a class.

Length of Appointment:
To provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, there is a minimum of one semester commitment to follow our program schedule. Semesters run from August to December and from January to June.
Time Commitment:
10-12 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week. Lesson planning time will depend on the volunteer.
Required Qualifications:
Instructors must have experience teaching computer literacy to youth and/or adults. The instructor needs to have knowledge of computer maintenance and software. An intermediate level of Spanish fluency is required in order to communicate with the students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for computer and electronic projects that can be integrated into the curriculum.
Support Provided:
A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and locations as well as a discussion of the computer literacy program with InspireDR’s Program Director.
At times, a Computer Literacy Assistant may be available to help the Computer Literacy Instructor.
For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Transportation from the airport will be facilitated by the Volunteer Coordinator. Visas are the responsibility of the volunteer.

Volunteers committing to at least two months may stay in the InspireDR volunteer housing free of charge, including water and utility costs. Drinking water and wifi are provided.
