Aquatics Program Assistant

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

The position of Aquatics Program Assistant supports InspireDR’s water safety and aquatic sports program.

Position Title:

Aquatics Program Assistant

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Aquatics Program Assistant will work with the Lead Aquatics Instructor to teach swim survival skills, techniques of swimming, and water safety lessons to groups of 12 to 18 boys. As the boys’ skills build, we will introduce life saving techniques and lifeguarding. In parallel, we include water sports in our program, so the Assistant will be involved with aquatic activities such as surfing and bodyboarding. Prior to your service, we can tell you what skill level of lessons we have coming up.

Reports To:

Volunteer Coordinator

Length of Appointment:

A minimum of a one-month commitment. However, to provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, a commitment of multiple months is strongly preferred.

Time Commitment:

4 to 8 hours per week

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must be confident swimmers

Preferred Qualifications:

While not required, volunteers with certifications and/or experience in swim instruction, lifeguarding, and rescue diving will serve to improve the safety of the boys and the quality of our aquatics program. In addition, volunteers able to provide basic first aid/CPR instruction would add an important element to the program. Those with at least an intermediate level of Spanish speaking ability will be better able to form relationships with the boys. Experience providing swim instruction to toddlers will allow us to expand our program.

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and locations, an introduction to the area, and a discussion of the aquatics program with the Lead Aquatics Instructor.

For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Transportation from the airport will be facilitated by the Volunteer Coordinator. Visas are the responsibility of the volunteer.

Aquatics Program Instructor

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

The position of aquatics program instructor supports InspireDR’s water safety and aquatic sports program. While the community is located on the coast, there has historically been a lack of swim instruction in the area, resulting in the loss of many lives. This program aims to reduce this danger by teaching local youth proper water safety and life saving techniques.

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Aquatics Program Instructor will work with our staff instructor to present our swimming curriculum in order to teach water survival skills, swimming, and water safety lessons to groups of 12 to 18 boys. Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have experience giving swim lessons to children and teenagers and must have been certified in first aid.

Preferred Qualifications:

Those with at least an intermediate level of Spanish speaking ability will be better able to form relationships with the boys. Experience providing swim instruction to toddlers will allow us to expand our program.

Current first aid certification:

Certification in water safety and lifeguarding

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and location as well as an introduction to the area. The instructor will be trained in our internationally-awarded swimming curriculum, techniques of teaching, and monitoring and evaluation approaches for the program.

For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Transportation from the airport will be facilitated by the Volunteer Coordinator. Visas are the responsibility of the volunteer.

Chef/Cooking Assistant

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

Locally, there is an over-reliance on processed foods, and many Dominicans and Haitians consume a diet that is high in sugar and salt. The position of Cooking Assistant helps InspireDR to promote a healthy lifestyle by teaching the boys how to make cheap and healthy recipes that they can easily prepare at home.

Position Title:

Chef/Cooking Assistant

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Cooking Assistant will help the Nutrition and Cooking Instructor with lessons. The Assistant’s duties may include: identifying easy, cheap, and healthy recipes that can be made with local ingredients; preparing materials prior to the start of the lesson; setting up food stations to ensure all boys are involved; and helping the instructor to keep the participants on task.

Length of Appointment:

A minimum of a one-month commitment. However, to provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, a commitment of multiple months is strongly preferred.

Time Commitment:

5-7 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week.

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must be comfortable using kitchen appliances and cutlery. They should have experience working in a commercial kitchen environment. An intermediate level of Spanish fluency is required in order to communicate with the students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education or experience in culinary studies, nutrition, or related topics; Experience working with youth; Food safety certification

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and locations as well as a discussion of the nutrition and cooking program with InspireDR’s Program Director.

For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Computer Literacy Assistant

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

The position of Computer Literacy Instructor supports InspireDR’s computer literacy program.Through the computer literacy program, the boys learn the basics of computer operation, how to use office productivity software, typing, and internet safety.

Computer Literacy Instructor

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Computer Literacy Instructor will provide beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons to groups of 12 to 18 boys. This is not an assistant position and – while the InspireDR staff is available to discuss lesson planning and the boys’ individual abilities – the Computer Literacy Instructor will be teaching on their own. As the boys’ skills build, we hope to introduce more computer projects in order to develop their employability and to help them with their school and university homework. Prior to your service, we can tell you what skill level of lessons we have coming up.

We are seeking an instructor who is able to make their classes fun and interactive. They will work with the Program Director to follow our curriculum as well as monitor and evaluate student progress.

The Computer Literacy Instructor will also maintain the computer lab’s materials, such as computers, software, tablets, and other electronics.

While attempts are made to keep the study groups close in age, there may be up to a five-year difference in age within a class.

To provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, there is a minimum of one semester commitment to follow our program schedule. Semesters run from August to December and from January to June.

Time Commitment:

10-12 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week. Lesson planning time will depend on the volunteer.

Required Qualifications:

Instructors must have experience teaching computer literacy to youth and/or adults. The instructor needs to have knowledge of computer maintenance and software. An intermediate level of Spanish fluency is required in order to communicate with the students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for computer and electronic projects that can be integrated into the curriculum.

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and locations as well as a discussion of the computer literacy program with InspireDR’s Program Director.

At times, a Computer Literacy Assistant may be available to help the Computer Literacy Instructor.

For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have a basic proficiency of Microsoft Office software and good verbal and written communication skills. An intermediate level of Spanish fluency is required in order to communicate with the students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with youth in a classroom environment, ideally teaching computer literacy. Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for computer and electronic projects that can be integrated into the curriculum.

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and locations as well as a discussion of the computer literacy program with InspireDR’s Program Director.

Donor Engagement Specialist

Purpose:

Promote InspireDR’s activities through events and social media in order to reach potential donors who can support us in our mission to help Dominican and Haitian boys in Cabarete become leaders and learn valuable life skills. The goal is to seek financial support to improve the sustainability of our programs.

Position Title:

Donor Engagement Specialist

Location:

Having someone in Cabarete (Dominican Republic) would be ideal so the volunteer can see InspireDR’s operations and form connections with the staff, boys, and local community. However, this is not a requirement and the position could be filled remotely.

Reports To:

Volunteer Coordinator

Length of Appointment:

A minimum of a three-month commitment. However, as fundraising efforts and establishing relationships with donors and sponsors are long-term activities, we would strongly prefer a commitment of six months or more.

Time Commitment:

The workload will vary, depending on the volunteer’s location, season, and responsibilities assumed. We expect it to be 7-10 hours per week, on average.

Required Qualifications:

The volunteer should have experience: using different social media platforms to raise awareness about causes and organizations; fundraising, either online or in person; Strong communication and writing skills;

Preferred Qualifications:

Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for computer and electronic projects that can be integrated into the curriculum.

Current first aid certification:

Certification in water safety and lifeguarding

Support Provided:

For on-site volunteers, a three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and location. For remote volunteers, this orientation will be cut to contain information relevant to the volunteer, but will include a more thorough discussion on the organization’s vision and funding goals.

Sports Instructor

Purpose:

The position of Sports Instructor supports InspireDR’s healthy lifestyle program. InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

Position Title:

Sports Instructor

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Sports Instructor will work with groups of 12 to 18 boys, teaching them different sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, cross fit, running, and more. The instructor will create and develop games that involve not only movement but will also teach boys life values through sports.

The instructor will develop an athletics curriculum with clear, measurable objectives regarding values, fitness, and mobility, resulting in healthy lifestyles.

Length of Appointment:

To provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, there is a minimum of one semester commitment. The semesters run from August to June and from January to June.

Time Commitment:

8-10 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week. Lesson planning time will depend on the volunteer.

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have experience teaching sports as well as teaching values through sports. In addition, they must demonstrate a healthy lifestyle.

Preferred Qualifications:

An intermediate level of Spanish speaking ability is required to discuss objectives, values, and life skills through sports with the boys. In addition, this ability to communicate will allow for better relationship building.

Support Provided:

A three-hour orientation is provided at the beginning of the volunteer service. This will include an overview of InspireDR’s history, programs, and location as well as an introduction to the area.

The instructor will have access to our equipment.

For volunteers arriving from outside the Sosúa/Cabarete area, information will be provided on the Dominican culture, the Puerto Plata region, and local amenities prior to your arrival. Transportation from the airport will be facilitated by the Volunteer Coordinator. Visas are the responsibility of the volunteer.

Gardening Assistant

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

In parallel with InspireDR’s nutrition and cooking program, the organization is introducing a gardening program to grow fresh produce and raise environmental awareness. Through growing flowers, fruit, and vegetables, the boys are learning about ingredients for healthy cooking as well as developing business skills around the sale of the produce.

Position Title:

Gardening Assistant

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Gardening Assistant will help the instructor with lessons as well as with garden maintenance. In addition, they will help keep the participants on task and ensure tools are used in a safe manner. They will be in charge of researching news ideas regarding permaculture and compost development.

We require a minimum of a one-month commitment. However, to provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, a commitment of multiple months is strongly preferred.

Time Commitment:

Preferred Qualifications:

Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for permaculture projects.

Environmental Studies Assistant

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

The position of Environmental Studies Assistant helps InspireDR staff to encourage local boys to care more about the environment and to increase interest in life sciences. Topics covered in the program include the health of local bodies of water, desalination, ecology, and human impacts on the environment. These lessons are taught through science projects that encourage the participants to use critical thinking to come up with practical solutions.

Position Title:

Environmental Studies Assistant

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The Environmental Studies Assistant will help the instructor with lessons. The Assistant’s duties may include: setting up environmental and recycling projects and pollution-related demonstrations for classroom lessons; providing the boys with guidance on project design and ideas for completing their assignments; and helping the instructor to keep the participants on task.

Length of Appointment:

A minimum of a one-month commitment. However, to provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, a commitment of multiple months is strongly preferred.

Time Commitment:

5-8 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week.

Required Qualifications:

Assistant must have experience teaching and creating environmental science projects. An intermediate level of Spanish fluency is required in order to communicate with the students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Volunteers are encouraged to come with their own ideas for classroom science experiments and projects that can be integrated into the curriculum. We are looking for someone able to present the material in a fun and interactive manner.

Volunteers should have an undergraduate degree in the natural sciences, environmental education, or related field.

Support Provided:

English (ESL) Instructor

Purpose:

The position of ESL Instructor supports InspireDR’s English language program. InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers.

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

The ESL Instructor will provide beginner English lessons to groups of 12 to 18 boys. This is not an assistant position and – while the InspireDR staff is available to discuss lesson planning and the boys’ individual abilities – the ESL Instructor teach on their own. As the boys’ skills build, we hope to introduce subject-specific vocabulary to develop their employability. Prior to your service, we can tell you what skill level of lessons we have coming up.

We are seeking an instructor who is able to make their classes fun and interactive. They will work with the Program Director to develop the curriculum and evaluate student progress.

While attempts are made to keep the study groups close in age, there may be up to a five-year difference in age within a class. However, student age does not correlate to English ability.

Length of Appointment:

To provide consistency in both lessons given and relationship-building with the boys, there is a minimum of one semester commitment to follow our program schedule. Semesters run from August to December and from January to June.

Time Commitment:

12-15 hours of lessons plus 1 hour of staff meetings per week. Lesson planning time will depend on the volunteer.

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have at least a four-year degree related to English Education and have taught in their home country. Basic computer literacy and the ability to work with multiple proficiency levels are expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

Volunteers with experience teaching English to non-native speakers will be stronger candidates. While the ESL classes are taught in an English-only format whenever possible, volunteers with at least an intermediate level of Spanish speaking ability will be better able to form relationships with the boys outside the classroom.

Purpose:

InspireDR provides free programs that teach practical life skills and instill positive values to local Dominican and Haitian boys ages 8-16, so they can mature into responsible men, husbands, and fathers. The position of ESL Assistant works with the English Instructor to support InspireDR’s English language program. InspireDR provides free English classes so that local Dominican and Haitian boys can work with native English speakers, developing their potential for better job opportunities later in life.

Key Responsibilities:

The ESL Assistant will help the English Instructor with lessons. The Assistant’s duties may include: preparing new materials needed for lessons; reading stories aloud in English; asking simple questions about the readings; reinforcing classes presented by the main instructor by reviewing the material with the boys one-on-one or in small groups.

ESL assistants must reinforce class rules and model the behavior we want to see in the boys. They may also assist the instructor by taking attendance, calculating grades, and helping supervise students in class.

Assistants will not teach on their own, but they might guide a small group of students under the supervision of the main ESL instructor.

Summer Camp Counselor

Purpose:

The position of Camp Counselor works as part of the summer camp staff and helps coordinate, conduct, and supervise all recreational activities with the boys. They are responsible for the well-being and safety of members, as well as for creating a safe, fun, and rewarding environment for them.

Location:

InspireDR Boys Club in Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Key Responsibilities:

Camp Counselors help facilitate the planned activities that are led by Lead Counselors, InspireDR staff, and Youth Leaders. This includes everything from coordinating activities, preparing equipment for trips, and helping with snacks, to classroom management, scavenger hunts, and going on excursions.

One week minimum; The camp will run Monday through Friday, June 29 to July 24. We ask that Camp Counselors make a weekly commitment for between one and four weeks.

Week 3: July 10; July 13 to July 17
Week 4: July 17; July 20 to July 24

Time Commitment:

8 am- 1 pm, Monday through Friday. On trip days, which are once or twice a week, camp goes from 8 am to 4 pm. Weeks two and three each have an overnight camping trip. Attendance is expected on all trips.

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have at least a basic level of Spanish fluency to carry on conversations with the boys. Language ability will be confirmed during the interview portion of the application process.

Volunteers must be able to help with activities under staff direction. They must have outgoing personalities and a desire to work with boys aged 8-17.

Preferred Qualifications:

Confidence in swimming and water safety skills; Knowledge of first aid

Benefits:

8 nights of lodging from the Friday orientation until the Saturday after the week of camp. Volunteers will be housed in secure, private or semi-private rooms in the same neighborhood as InspireDR (Callejón de la Loma, Cabarete), about ½ mile from the beach. Volunteers may share a room and private bathroom with another camp counselor, but will have their own bed. There is wifi at both the InspireDR Boys Club and in the lodging. There is a swimming pool at each locations. Rooms have air conditioning and mosquito screens on the windows.

Breakfast and lunch on orientation and camp days. Kitchen available at the lodging, and restaurants serving both local and Western cuisine are within walking distance.

The summer starts off with 5 half days of planning activities with staff and the Inspire boys who have been selected to be leaders this summer. This includes not only the planning of camp activities but also time to get to know the other leaders through team-building activities. During the actual camp, the Lead Counselor helps to lead the planned activities. This includes everything from coordinating activities, preparing equipment for trips, and helping with snacks, to classroom management, scavenger hunts, and going on excursions.

Five weeks; Orientation and planning will be June 22-26. The camp will run Monday through Friday, June 29 to July 24.

Time Commitment:

8 am- 1 pm, Monday through Friday. On trip days (once or twice per week, camp goes from 8 am to 4 pm. Weeks two and three each have an overnight camping trip. Attendance is expected on all trips.

Required Qualifications:

Volunteers must have at least an intermediate level of Spanish fluency to carry on conversations with the boys. Language ability will be confirmed during the interview portion of the application process.
